100 Word Challenge: Chasm

Two inches.

The divide feels greater than it appears. She can see him but not touch him. The murmurs around her ebb and flow with emotion: tears, anger, confusion.

He approaches with eyes downcast, ashamed. One look will reveal the pain he’s caused. She glances down fiddling with a pen, considering… assessing.

A subtle click as he picks up the receiver. She looks at him, searching, and then picks up her end.

“I’m sorry,” he breathes softly. One hand reaches up, fingertips resting lightly upon the barrier. Her fingers twitch yet lie still. Trust is a gift not a right.
