The candle flickered, hiccuping in the subtle breeze from the open window. She laid her fork down and smiled across the table.
“My compliments to the chef,” she said, ignoring the takeout containers stuffed in the kitchen garbage can. He grinned back and took a gulp of wine.
“It was the least I could do, “ he said. “I’m sorry I’ve been working so much lately. It’ll get better, I promise.”
Toying with the cruise brochure next to her plate she looked at the new diamond ring that hugged her finger.
“All part of the job, right?” she said sadly.
