Ten little fingers. Ten little toes. Screams and coos. Not silence. Silence was heartbreaking. Silence was scary. Silence meant troubles.
The ward was full of sound. Voices raised in joy, sadness, and anger. Beeps from machines, pings in the announcement system, rings from the phone. The phone never stopped ringing. She pushed her cart down the hall, her shoes squeaking along the newly waxed floors and entered a room at the end.
“How are we doing today?” Her voice was deliberately brighter. The woman curled up on the bed, one hand resting on the chest of her newborn child.
“Perfect.”
