100 Word Challenge: Playing the Game

“You shouldn’t be involved in this!”

She looked at the file in her hands, the perfectly calculated numbers, the labor of love. Shattered, she let the sheaf drop to the floor, pages scattering like leaves.

“I thought I could help. I’m bored.” She shifted the growing weight of her abdomen and turned to leave. A flurry of kicks brought her up short and she sucked in her breath. He met her gaze and the anger melted away. Reaching out a hand, he tentatively laid it on her belly.

“I don’t make the rules, I just play by them,” he whispered.
