100 Word Challenge: Preparation is futile

The mirror is surrounded with images: first smiles, birthday cake smeared cheeks, exuberant splashing in the pool, building mud pies, standing unsteadily. Mixed in are the occasional sad, solemn expression, red faced displeasure, and flowing tears.

She watches him, silently, as he firms his facial expression and says, “No”. His stance is proper, his finger held up, lecturing. He meets the clear blue gaze of the child in each image and speaks as if she is real.

“What are you doing?” she asks, trying not to laugh. He half turns, a flush suffusing his cheeks, and grins.

“Practicing my resistance.”

  1. Ha! This really created a great visual. Those little imps are hard to resist — I should know, I raised one. She’s 18 now and still knows how to play things to get her way.

  2. Love it – but I imagine his back is still bowed from being twisted around her little finger. :)

  3. R.L.W.

Ssssoooooo cute! I love this. Great job!

  4. Hahaha! Fantastic image!

  5. Maybe I should have practiced my ‘Nos’ more when my kids were little. I really like what you did with the prompt.

  6. this may be my favorite 100 words from you. Funny and the imagery is excellent.

Just wrote my 100 words, it will post Friday morning.

  7. I love your piece for this week. I have personal experience with little girls and they can be quite persuasive. :)

    Two critiques:
    Encircled or encased instead of surrounded. The mirror, encircled with images;
    And
    Strengthening instead of practicing.

Great imagery. I can really see a dad doing this. Excellent story arch as well.

  8. Hah!! Well done. I never thought of that – you know, practicing in the mirror. Should have done, I suppose. I liek this piece a lot.

  9. Interesting setting of the stage.

Comments and Critique ALWAYS welcome!!
