Rachel danced into her room, humming Touchstone’s latest single under her breath. She twirled on one toe and fell laughing onto her bed.
“Mirror! Oh, Mirror! Are you there?” She called out, her joy bubbling up through her voice. A wisp of light caught her attention and she turned her head to watch the mirror materialize on the bedside table. Amazed, Rachel snapped it up and watched as her reflection appeared.
“Holy…how did you do that?” She asked. She gripped the edges of the mirror trying to reaffirm to herself that it was solid. The reflection gave her a ghost of a smile saying nothing. Rachel frowned.
“So secretive. I don’t understand why you don’t talk to me more,” she pouted. The reflection smiled wider.
“It’s against the rules, Rachel. I’ve told you that.” She turned and settled onto a chair that appeared behind her. “I talk to you far more than I should. Now, what’s your news? I’m gathering something momentous has occurred to make you so chipper.”
“I had the most amazing time with Nate tonight. He’s such a fantastic guy, so down to earth.” She fell back against her pillows and stared dreamily up at the ceiling. “I was a little worried, you know, because he’s famous. But it just goes to show celebrity doesn’t always go to your head.”
“Nate, is it? What happened to Nathan?”
“Well, he’s still Nathan. He’ll always be Nathan. But Nate is the name he goes by so…why wouldn’t I call him that?” She looked at her reflection, worry creasing the corners of her eyes.
“I’m just trying to keep you grounded in reality, Rachel. You’re letting yourself get all starry-eyed, more than you were before.” She held up her hands, giving up. “I apologize. Go on.”
Rachel pushed up and drew her knees in tight to her body. She laid her chin down and let her hair cascade over her shoulders, shielding her face. The light from the mirror intensified, bathing her in a soft golden glow.
“Rachel, what is it? You’ve never been afraid of telling me anything and everything on your mind before.”
“It’s just…what if you’re right? What if I’m running head long towards making an utter fool of myself again? I know I need to be more cautious but…every time I’m with him my heart begins doing this crazy dance and I just want to throw myself into his arms. He has such a magnetic pull; I don’t know what it is.” She looked up at her reflection, tears rimming her eyes. “Can’t you help? Use magic to keep me more level headed?”
The reflection shook her head. “I’m sorry, Rachel. I don’t have that power. You need to make your own choices. Magic won’t make him fall in love with you any more than it will keep you from acting like a lovesick fool.”
“I didn’t really think so,” she sighed. “He’s Nate Anders, lead singer of Touchstone, he could have any woman he wants. I want him to want me…I don’t want to become a rock star’s leftovers.”
This week at Story Dam the prompt was about dealing with leftovers. I took a slightly different approach with it.
This is part of Rachel’s second leap, where Nathan is a Rock Star

This is a great tie-in for the prompt. I’m enjoying these story snippets (now that I understand what is going on, lol!)
I think I may be on the same page as Renee, though. The mirror seems to be getting rather “friendly”. I’m curious if these “rules” are the mirrors or something else’s. Maybe I’m over-thinking it?
Ooh, I love how you interpreted the concept of leftovers! Great piece, but I always feel so bad for Rachel after I read these story bits. I just want her to find peace and contentment within herself.
The first paragraph is perfect. It’s so “Rachel”.
This is very good character dvelopment. It explaisn the emotional rollercoaster she’s on with jumping place to place. Well done.
Great approach to the prompt – nice twist. So glad I’m not into bad-boys anymore. But I was for way too long. I thanks God for hubs every day

*Sigh* I remember a boy named Ronnie that had the same disastrous effect on me. You can’t help who you love, eh?
I enjoyed this peek into Rachel’s head. It cleared up many questions.
I love the interaction with the mirror. Rachel bouncing from giddy to self conscious.
And the mirror breaking her own rules about talking too much? Hmmm.
